8. Testimony from Elliot Miller

1) Q. I have heard of the Christian Research Institute, but not of Elliot Miller. Who is he?
A. Elliot Miller is an ordained minister with pastoral experience and a Bible teacher. He has served as editor-in-chief for all of Christian Research Institute’s (CRI) publications and has been featured with CRI President Hank Hanegraaff on the nationally syndicated Bible Answer Man radio program.

2) Q. As an ordained minister, what does he have to say about the teachings of Lee and the local churches?
A. Western Christianity tends to oversimplify the Trinity while the teaching of Witness Lee and the local churches actually are bringing a correction to a problem within Western evangelicalism.

3) Q. Among Christians, the Trinity has been a subject for debate. What about the local churches?
A. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that, in regards to the Trinity, they (the Local Churches) are bringing a corrective to a problem within Western Evangelicalism.

4) Q. I know that there was an open letter that was signed by 70 Christians. How could they be wrong?
A. Something that Elliot personally found even more amazing than the idea that seventy Christians (and not just Christians, but many of these people are leading scholars, apologists, thinkers, counter-cult workers) that they could be wrong. To him, it’s even more amazing that he could be wrong. And he was wrong, you see.

5) Q. If Elliot Miller admitted being wrong, did any of his colleagues do the same thing?
A. Yes, Gretchen Passantino also did the same. She was Elliot Miller’s colleague and worked with him under Walter Martin in the 1970’s. Gretchen along with her husband, Bob, did the original research on the Local Church movement. They actually wrote the very first critique of it in 1975.

6) Q. A lot of criticism was written and spoken against the local churches. What was the source of all of this?
A. You see, it was on the basis of their research primarily, that the whole body of literature on the Local Church was built. And the quotations that appear in this open letter, they’re very familiar with, because Elliot Miller and his colleagues unearthed a lot of those.

7) Q. If the original critiques about the local churches were based on faulty research, what does this say?
A. To Elliot, that they would be wrong only follows since they’re building their conclusions on Elliot Miller and his colleagues original work. And they were wrong.

8) Q. Even though the local churches failed Elliot Miller’s litmus test, why were they labeled as heretical?
A. If we stamp heresy on a group because they failed their litmus test, we may not realize first, that was a culturally more than theologically determined stamp.

9) Q. Being labeled heretical was a cultural stamp. Was there a second reason?
A. The second reason is that the consequences of that, is that our brothers and sisters in Christ directly because of what was published, are being put in prison, and persecuted, and some don’t return alive.

10) Q. Elliot’s research affected many people. Has he met with anyone whom his material has affected?
A. Elliot Miller traveled to China and met people who had been in prison as a result of material that he and others have published. And those people could not have been more gracious, but the Holy Spirit was gracious enough to let Elliot Miller see the consequences of his past cavalier actions.
